This article is a fascinating look at the history of slavery in the Americas and the brutality of British enslavement of the Irish. That Irish slaves were less expensive than African slaves, and thus often mated to African slaves to produce higher value African slaves goes a long way toward explaining the high level of European blood in African-Americans here, in addition to the known rape that was prevalent.
I think that slavery is THE major issue facing humanity: not just the enslavement of others, but how so much of our cultural presumptions emerge from a culture of enslavement. Enslavement? you might ask. Yes! When you consider how Christianity was forced upon the indigenous peoples of Europe, the treatment of the Irish at the hands of other Europeans lends a fairly late-historical glimpse at how some of the last remnants of indigenous, proud and independent people were wiped out and brought into subjection. That subjection is at the very heart of notions of majority rule, for example, i.e. individuals and minorities should be brought into subjection, other people's property, their lives, their beliefs, their choices should be brought into subjection. Our lover should be subject to our desires. Our "mate" should be subject to belonging to us, etc., and in intimacy anything less than subjection is betrayal.
How we each carry that legacy is a profound consideration. I sincerely hope that this will lend fresh perspective to our understanding of our human sojourn.
When we appreciate that the very word slave comes from the word "slav" we get a sense of the ruthless treatment and traffic of human beings by others.
I have said for a long time that slavery in the United States was not abolished, it's being continually perfected and generalized. It's been made into an equal-opportunity proposition and pasted over with slogans like "freedom, courage, patriotism." Notice that actions portraying the latter are usually celebrated when carried out by people in a "chain of command," i.e. slaves, serfs, subjects of others' decisions.

they weren't “white” until the slaves were “freed” (which is a lie in itself, nobody was freed, they were just sold to the State instead, just like the rest of us).
when the slaves were freed, they were given birth certificates (which is basically a bill of sale, a note of bondage, if you will… link). if they had brown skin, they were called “Africans” and if they had lighter skin, they were called “Irish”
it has nothign to do with where their families originated, it was only based solely upon the color of their skin. and part of this was simply to hide the truth in history, cover it up with lies. because the whole system is based upon lies, and truth is the only weapon we have with which to fight those lies. in order for the state to rule, it's main objective is to hide truth at all costs. even if that means millions, billions of lives must be lost.
slave ships, much like modern warfare, dealt only with young men. women and children were far too costly to maintain on such a long, arduous voyage. not to mention the fear of menstrual blood and legends of huge sea monsters…
likewise with the early settlements. women weren't allowed on boats, are you kidding? there was no sea captain in his right mind would travel across monster-infested waters in a small wooden vessel smelling of blood!!
so if those men who came to the shores of this continent during the 15th to 18th centuries AD are believed to have any descendants at all, there had to be women involved in the process. what does that mean to us, today? it means that the vast majority of inhabitants of North America are descended from the indigenous tribes who were here long before “civilization” came to destroy everything we hold to be sacred and true.
Great link, Boogie, YES! we are legally chattel (i.e. livestock) of the Federal Reserve Bank, held as collateral against the national debt, and slavery was not eliminated, it was perfected so as to be invisible to the slaves.

Another thing I was thinking last night, “why must we get a damn marriage license?” What business is that of the government? What next, oh wait… the CHIP via Real ID and then the RFChip… hahahaha… tagging us like dogs. How utterly pathetic that these people feel that it's right to do these things. but all they have is $$$$ in their eyes. And the masses, those silly little sheeple all they can do is bicker amongst themselves over political, racial and religious lines while the powers that be do the “tyrannical shuffle”. We must stand up, together, all of us. :)

It's not about right or wrong. Sheep get butchered. Slaves serve. Period. Historically, we're the lucky ones. If you were in Baghdad things could be a lot worse, or Kosovo several years ago, or Afghanistan, or, now, Syria. They can because WE let them. They can because WE are programmed as slaves. And if we were to stand up together, we'd stand up with all of our slave programming and recreate the same thing.
This shit has got to play itself all the way out. Nature is not a respecter of persons. That's up to us. And it takes the courage and the curiosity to dive deeply within and to see how we are “gamed,” how we're programmed, how we react, etc.
So it's all beautiful. It's our next step in evolution. We need to move beyond the “savior of mankind” pandering that slaves are prone to and return to genuine collaboration, friendship, adventure and kinky antics in the labyrinth.

The answer to “what is government's driving force?” is elucidated by the further question “what is government's defining characteristic” i.e. what distinguishes a governmental endeavor from a non-governmental endeavor, and I would join Thomas Jefferson in saying that the defining characteristic is to engage in violence, theft, confiscation, kidnapping with impunity. In brief, the defining characteristic is FORCE. And to all the people who look at Obama as any representation of “hope,” he, too, will implement his wonderful programs by FORCE!
And, yes, it's a damn shame what they are doing on the banks of the Euphrates, so typical of this culture of the “children of forgetting.”
